When David Gilks asked me to lead Core Essentials Baby Stroller Boot Camp in April 2008, I jumped at the chance! The first class of its kind in Nanaimo, Baby Stroller Boot Camp brings new mums together to enjoy the many benefits of exercise, without having to leave their babies at home. I am proud to be a part of this effort that not only provides mums with a safe, effective way to get back into shape, but offers them a network of social support as well.

As a mother of two, I have experienced first-hand the positive impact that exercise can have during the post-natal period. Unable to exercise during my second pregnancy due to a painfully inflamed hip, I was still thirty pounds overweight two months after the birth of my son. As well, the postpartum depression that I had experienced after my first pregnancy had returned; just getting through each day was a struggle. With the encouragement of David Gilks, owner of Core Essentials, I started a program of regular cardio and strength training, and the difference it made was amazing. I had more energy, felt stronger, and the symptoms of the postpartum depression were considerably diminished. Slowly but steadily, the pregnancy weight came off and was replaced with lean muscle. That year I entered my first 10k run; quite an accomplishment for someone who had never before enjoyed running!  Best of all, I was a happier mum, better able to enjoy my new baby.

My wish for Baby Stroller Boot Camp is this: that the mums who meet at my class can learn from each other as they forge lasting relationships, and that they are instilled with a lifelong love of physical activity that will enrich not only their own lives, but also the lives of their children. To paraphrase Ralph Waldo Emerson, if I know that even one life has breathed easier because I have lived-this is to have succeeded.
